Top Ten Talking Donkeys

Top Ten Talking Donkeys

First things first. I’m sure you’re thinking what do I mean when I say talking donkeys. Well, as I am sure you must have guessed, these are not actual talking donkeys. These are just donkeys that have been featured in movies and animated films that we have grown to like. This particular list discusses ten such donkeys that probably were a part of your childhood, teenage years and even adulthood. The rankings are based on opinions. Please enjoy the read!

10. THE ASS IN THE LION’S SKIN

The Ass in the Lion's Skin - Top Ten Talking Donkeys

This is actually a story about a donkey (ass) who would dress himself up as a lion in order to scare other animals. His trick works on all the other animals but unfortunately he tries to talk to a fox. Now, I am sure you know how cunning foxes are and so it instantly figured out that it was not a lion. He figured out that he was only dressed as a lion. The moral that comes out of the story is that no matter how one dresses or carries oneself, a fool remains a fool. All it takes is for one to open his mouth. True story!

9. BABA LOOEY

Do you guys remember the Quick Draw McGraw Show? If you do, you probably also know what donkey I am talking about. Baba Looey, is a donkey with this Mexican accent which actually is kind of cute. Cute and adorable aside, he really is loyal and very resourceful. He would provide valuable information and would always be there for his friends. Baba Looey was voiced by Hanna-Barbera legend by the name of Daws Butler and he did a splendid job. Baba Looey takes the ninth spot.

8. BENJAMIN

Benjamin comes from this tale called Animal Farm that came out in 1945 and was by George Orwell. The story was about farm animals as you probably guessed and mostly involved pigs. That was the symbolizing of Soviet politics. Benjamin is a talking donkey from that particular tale. Benjamin being a pessimist is a realist. One of his lines in the story goes like ‘Donkeys live a long time. None of you has ever seen a dead donkey’. Of course you will not really understand what he meant unless you read the book but I am sure you can grasp some meaning if you consider the symbolization.

7. NESTOR

Do you guys remember this show? I believe it is an intense mix of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Dumbo the elephant from Dumbo. Nestor is the donkey as I am sure most of you guessed. He is long eared (freakishly so) and that’s the prime reason why he is rejected by all the other donkeys out there. The poor guy, his mother is also killed. Nestor journeys to Israel where he finds Mary and Joseph. He helps them to travel to Bethlehem and that is where baby Jesus is born. Fantastic show if you ask me.

6. YA’FOOR

This particular donkey comes from a book called The Beginning and the End. There’s a story in that book by the name of ‘The Conversations of the Donkey’. Muhammad receives a gift from God. The gift includes four sheep, four goats, ten pots of gold and silver and a donkey that can talk. According to the donkey, his actualy name was Yazid Ibn Shihab but Muhammad says he’ll call him Ya’foor and the donkey agrees. Also, the donkey does not desire girls. This was his answer when asked whether he does or not.
